Dauphin Island Marsh Restoration Work Announced

DAUPHIN ISLAND, Ala. — The Connection has announced that the Graveline Bay Marsh Restoration Project engineering, design and permitting phase has been completed. The final design includes the construction of 60 acres of marsh mounds that maximize marsh edge habitat for fish, crabs, shrimp and other wildlife. The material to build the mounds will be dredged from a site just north of Graveline Bay and west of the airport. They will be planted with the same species of marsh plants currently at the site. Once the plants grow, they will help create an integrated habitat with a mosaic of tidal creeks and ponds. The project, under a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nationwide Permit 27, builds on previous restoration work completed by the Town of Dauphin Island. Construction is to begin in summer once a marine contractor is secured and will take approximately four months to complete.
