Little Lagoon Restoration Updates

The Gulf Shores City Council recently voted to accept an additional $2 million from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill settlement funds for the construction of public access at Laguna Cove on the southwest side of Little Lagoon, AL.com reports. The project will preserve 53 acres of waterfront habitat for endangered species, while providing a boardwalk and other recreational activities. Alabama’s Trustee Implementation Group, tasked with distributing funds from the oil spill settlements, approved the additional $2 million in November 2024. This will allow the city to bid out the project soon. The $6.4-million project will restore waterfront habitat damaged in Hurricane Ivan in 2004. It is to be completed by summer 2026.
